INTRODUCTION

A resume is a short and crisp summary of your educational qualifications, skills, technical expertise, and work or project-related experiences. Your resume is your first communication with the employer.  

Employers want to know whether you are eligible for the job role that they have advertised for. The majority of recruiters scan resumes for keywords that fit the job description in 25 to 30 seconds.

In this article, we will walk you through the steps of writing a resume that is appealing, informative, and concise.

RESUME HIGHLIGHTS - INFORMATION TO INCLUDE IN A RESUME

There is a widely accepted guideline for what information you can include on a resume.  To make it easier, divide the content into separate sections.

Mention the following details in the Resume:

NAME AND CONTACT DETAILS

Start writing your resume with the personal details mentioned below. You should include this information in the header.

First name and Last name

Address

Telephone number

Mobile number

E-mail address (Use a professional-sounding e-mail address.) For example, “FirstName.LastName@gmail.com”)

CAREER OBJECTIVE

A career objective is usually 3-4 sentences long and has information on:

  • your field of study
  • skills and experiences (ones that are relevant to the job);
  • professional goals

You should clearly state here that you are applying for a given position to contribute the knowledge, skills, and expertise that you have gained so far from your college studies and other project-related experiences.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION 

This section should include the details of your academic credentials beginning with high school. It's best to write the details in reverse chronological order. You should also include institution, the year of study or duration and the grades earned.

Apart from the college degree, if you have completed any other professional or technical courses, include those details within your education section.

List the details in the following order:

  • Name of the degree
  • Name of the institution
  • Years attended
  • Grades earned

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

Here, highlight your technical skills such as proficiency in programming skills, knowledge of coding, and graphic designing.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

List the details in the following order:

  • Title of the Internship
  • Company name, location
  • Internship duration and team size
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Skills learned
  • Achievements

PROJECT WORK EXPERIENCE

Project work is always a great addition as it shows you are skilled and competent for the job. 

Here’s how you list the details

  • Title of the Project
  • Type of project
  • Project duration
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Skills learned
  • Achievements if any

Note: Keep in mind that the interviewers will allow you to explain the project details. They may ask questions based on the information you provide, so do not exaggerate the details of your project. The information should be factual, not flattering.

PERSONAL STRENGTHS / SKILLS

Make a list of at least five skills and competencies that you have. 

Example: 

Strong interpersonal skills

Proven ability to work well in teams

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

Proven ability to lead teams

Adapt quickly to a diverse environment 

Detailed oriented, ability to multitask effectively

CERTIFICATIONS / AWARDS / ACHIEVEMENTS 

List at least three awards or certifications from sports, debates, quiz contests, paper presentations, science talent tests, and other activities.

HOBBIES, INTERESTS, AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

This section conveys that you can maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Information provided here can be an asset. Mention hobbies that have helped you accomplish your goals

PERSONAL INFORMATION:
